From the Desk of Uncle Ben…

The Long Road, Road

The Long Road, Road

Are you ready for the ride of your life??? The Long Road promises that and more! What other ride encourages you to strap your saddlebags to your vintage iron or chopper and head out on a multi-day journey over some of the most beautiful back roads east of the Mississippi? We have no chase truck, but we do, however, provide a comprehensive list of bike shops along an optional route that, even if paralleled, will ensure you are never far from a bike shop for parts or an emergency repair! All types of bikes are welcome.

Travel 250-300 miles at your own pace and then enjoy the camaraderie and revelry with your fellow riders at the end of each day at a scheduled stop. Campgrounds are set up to welcome us. Some of them will have cabins or nearby motels. For new riders, once you have signed in at each stop, you will receive the coveted Long Road Medallion at our final destination, The World Famous Smoke Out!

So come join us on the 7th edition of The Long Road and find out why many of the riders say it’s the best ride they’ve ever ridden and why they keep coming back, year after year!

As mentioned above, campgrounds are set up to receive the majority of riders who wish to camp (most have a few cabins as well), while the closest motels are listed below for those who want to enjoy the ride but would prefer the comfort of a motel room. It is advised that those who want a cabin or motel room book these in advance!

Note that prices quoted are based on what they were during planning and are subject to change. All riders are responsible to pay for their own camping, motels, and meals unless otherwise noted!

The Ride

This year’s adventure begins with a meet and greet at a campground in the artisan village of Nashville, Indiana. Riders will arrive Sunday June 14th at Valley Branch Retreat a few miles south east of Nashville, IN.

From there, the ride begins Monday June 15th with a leisurely scenic 330 mile ride, mainly along the Ohio River to Huntington, West Virginia and then to the Fox Fire KOA for a night around the campfire! The longer day on flatter ground allows for a shorter but more challenging 250 mile ride through multiple passes over the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia on Tuesday! We arrive Tuesday June 16th in the scenic village of Buena Vista, Virginia.

On Wednesday June 17th, we travel further east, then south through the mountains, followed by the foothills of Virginia and North Carolina to Goldsboro, North Carolina for an evening at Whiskey Dick’s Saloon where we will enjoy the pool tables, barbecue, and salads. The campground for this night is conveniently located right out back. The total mileage for Wednesday will be about 285 miles.

Thursday June 18th has us heading south near and along the Atlantic coast to the infamous Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There, we will ride to the Suck Bang Blow bar for the 2nd of 2 Smoke Out pre-parties equipped with bands, camping, and entertainment! Thursday will be about a 270 mile day.

On Friday June 19th, we depart for the one and only, legendary Smoke Out in Rockingham, North Carolina! Friday will be a short 125 mile trip.

As stated last year, this ride, although not as wild as The Stampede and also not a race, is still very challenging considering the complexity of some of the mountain passes and switchbacks. It is not recommended for beginner riders! As such, EACH RIDER RIDES AT THEIR OWN RISK!

Volunteers and planners of The Long Road 2015 will not be held responsible for any injury or death resulting from a rider crashing his or her motorcycle or sustaining any injuries for the duration of the ride for ANY reason! A waiver will be signed by each rider and passenger prior to participating in the ride. Route is OPTIONAL and only set up to determine locations for local motorcycle shops! Riders may choose any route they wish!
